High school students across the country, robbed of Prom during the pandemic, can seize a second chance to get all dressed up by participating in Prom Palooza 2020.

The idea encourages teens nationwide to replicate the fun and excitement of Prom then share photos of the experience on social media using the hashtag #PromPalooza2020.

“This is all about teens creating memories that will last a lifetime,” says Tom Buchanan, organizer of Prom Palooza 2020. The virtual event takes place July 24, 25, and 26 at any place prom-goers want to celebrate whether in their living room, backyard, park, restaurant, while abiding by local COVID-19 guidelines.

“Anyone can participate in Prom Palooza 2020,” says Buchanan, owner of Bella Boutique in Knoxville, TN. “Grab your besties, family or special someone to celebrate.”

Buchanan came up with the idea after observing how disappointed his customers felt when COVID-19 cancelled Prom. “The girls cried when their dreams of dressing up in long formal dresses got shattered,” he said. “For so many teens, Prom represents their first red-carpet moment.”

Buchanan’s vision focuses on participants doing some - or all - of the rituals traditionally associated with Prom night including :

  •  Getting all dressed up in a picture-perfect dress or tuxedo
  •  Wearing glamorous hairstyles and evening makeup
  •  Taking photos and sharing them on social media

All Dressed Up and Somewhere to Go... Now

The Class of 2020, starved for socialization after months of sheltering at home and sad to see rites of passage like Prom erased by a virus, appears infatuated with Prom Palooza 2020.

“I have always dreamed of my senior prom, but I didn’t think it was going to be possible given the circumstances,” explained Nicole Lee, of Farragut High School in Knoxville, TN.

“Prom Palooza is giving me the chance to wear my prom dress and capture these unforgettable memories. Now, Prom 2020 will be one for the books.”

Buchanan announced Prom Palooza 2020 in mid-June. Almost instantly the idea gained traction with dress store owners across the country who shared details for the celebration on social media and websites.

Prom Palooza 2020 is getting a big boost as the top prom dress designers promote the celebration as a creative way to salvage a highly anticipated end-of-the school year experience.

Supporters acknowledge that Prom Palooza 2020 can never replace the magic of being on the dance floor at a traditional Prom Night. But a virtual substitution still lets teens reimagine Prom despite the extraordinary circumstances.

“Best of all... teens get photos to keep forever,” says Buchanan.
