Certain things in my life aren’t up for debate.
Working out is one of them.
I exercise every day, no matter what. The question is not if I’m going to work out. It’s when and how.
That distinction may sound small, but it matters.
Some days, the answer is easy. I have plenty of time, the weather is gorgeous and I do exactly what I’d planned. Other days, life gets in the way. My schedule changes, a storm rolls in or I don’t feel great.
So I adjust – working out later in the day, doing a different activity or intensity, or moving indoors instead of going outside.
The point isn’t that my original plan has to happen exactly as I imagined. It’s that I’ve already decided the priority matters and I’m going to do it in some form no matter what.
Reading the stories in this issue made me think about that approach.
Running an independent boutique means spending every day surrounded by things competing for your attention. You simply cannot make everything a top priority.
So what have you decided is non-negotiable?
Maybe it’s investing in your employees by paying them fairly and making sure they know they matter. Maybe it’s maintaining a beautiful store because you believe the environment should reflect the significance of the dress purchase. Maybe it’s continuing to market your business even when money is tight, because disappearing from view isn’t a viable growth strategy.
Or perhaps it’s protecting time with your family, your own physical/mental health or the individuality of your business.
No matter what your answer, remember that non-negotiable doesn’t mean never change.
One of the strongest themes throughout this issue is that successful boutiques constantly adapt. Brides’ behavior changes, technology advances, the economy shifts, new challenges appear – sometimes seemingly overnight – and you have to respond.
The trick is knowing the difference between changing your approach and changing what you stand for.
That’s what I love about the idea of non-negotiables. They aren’t rigid rules that prevent us from adapting. They’re anchors that help us decide how to adapt.
Your boutique deserves that same clarity.
Because there will never be enough time, money or energy to do absolutely everything.
Your goal instead is to decide what matters most – and stop making those things fight for a place on your list.
